#11 Being Little as a Superpower

One thing that really strikes me about feeling little is that you develop a lot of superpowers from it. I think one of the reasons that I have come to be so observant is because I have avoided being assertive. I mean, sure, I can ask for help with things when I need it. Sometimes I still do, even just for the sake of talking to someone. But it comes far more naturally to me to observe things from afar and let all the information tumble around in my head until it all clicks. I’m far better at figuring things out on my own, and I think a big part of it is because I have felt a little…little.

Things like that happen far more naturally when you tend to keep quiet and locked up in a box. By no means am I trying to say that this type of living is ideal, or that it should be the norm. But if you have been there to that place of shyness and fear of others, you may find yourself with the power of cleverness as a byproduct.

But what do we do with that information? How can we turn that into a lesson for everyone everywhere?

Maybe I could figure this out, if only my seasonal allergies would chill out for a bit.

First of all, take time to observe the observant. Us quiet folk may know a thing or two about a thing or two. Maybe even pick our brains every now and then. Give us a little spotlight and we will run with it. (Sometimes we may run away with it, so be ready for that too.)

But can we harness this ability so that anyone can use it? Could anyone become this observant, insightful, and clever? All my heart wants to say yes, but I’m struggling to figure out how. After all, this way of life stems from great fear and helplessness. It calls for a whole new way of thinking, of being that isn’t natural or healthy.

Or maybe it isn’t. Maybe you don’t have to feel small, you have to be small. And everyone goes through a period of life when they’re small. Our careers start out paying very little, we may move to a new area to start over in life. Whatever the case may be, there are times in our lives when we all happen to be in a very powerless state.

And it’s in these times that we learn to be resourceful. I know I have learned a lot about socializing when my friend list has hit 0. Maybe we need to jump into a few of those types of situations. Maybe we need to try to stretch our budget for a bit. Commit to helping some people or donating to a good cause. Some of us might just need to practice making new friends or getting into new hobbies. Whatever the case, we need to get outside our realm of power for a bit to learn all the skills that come with being a bit smaller.

So that’s what I pray for you: that you find an area to grow in. That the area where you don’t feel big enough in stares you dead in the face, and that you answer it’s call to go dive into it. I pray you find yourself growing and flourishing wherever you go

Until next time

May peace be your guide
