Usually before I start another 2-week series, I spend a little time praying and marinating on what topic I should sink my teeth into. The last few have felt crystal-clear to me: a new job should mean some time thinking about new beginnings and new challenges should merit a chapter on growth. But this last one was a bit more slow-coming to me. But something clicked in my head recently that made me decide on this idea of “finding your magic.” Let me explain
As I was wrapping up this last series “son of man,” I said to myself “this is great and all, but I still feel like a child. Why do I still feel like a silly little ninny? I should feel like a mighty man!” And yeah, I know, growing takes time. But I was hungry for my next step, my initiation into maturity. I felt I deserved it there and then. But a thought flashed through my mind:
The first step towards true maturity is full self- transparency.
Translation: in order to truly grow, you have to admit who you are growing from. Even if that means ‘fessing up to the fact that you feel like a lad, running scared through the night. That can be hard to admit to yourself, and even harder to live out. And if it were just me all by my lonely, I definitely wouldn’t do it. I’d cling to my false bravado with reckless desperation.
But I’m tangenting, here. Usually I wind up watching a movie or two on Sundays as a nice way to cool off before the work week gets rolling. The movie of the day was “The House with the Clock in its Walls.” In case you haven’t seen it, it’s a tale of a young boy named Lewis who loses his parents in a car crash and goes to live with his uncle. Turns out his uncle is a warlock and teaches Lewis how to use magic, as well as how to embrace his true, weird self.
There’s a scene in the movie where Lewis is trying to cast his first spell. He tries and tries and eventually gives up. And his uncle gives him a piece of advice that stood out to me.
“I can teach you all the right words and give you all the right books, but that extra 1% has to come from you. You have to develop your own magic touch.”
That line struck me. I started asking myself “what is my magic touch? What does that even mean?” And that’s what I want to take the next two weeks to unpack. We will talk about what a magic touch is, where to find yours and ultimately, how this can impact the rest of your life. As always, I’m pretty excited to share my discoveries with you as we embark on this journey together.
If you haven’t seen the movie already, “The House with the Clock in its Walls” has become one of my favorite fantasy adventures. Though it does involve magic, I don’t see any reason not to see it, as they don’t dive deep into it like Harry Potter. And it’s more than worth it to see the back-and-forth bickering between Cate Blanchett and Jack black. Overall, it’s such a fun film that I’d be sad to see anyone pass it up.
So go see it! And then come back ready to dive in as we explore our magic styles, and how to find ourselves amidst the wonder of our lives!
Until next time
May Peace be your Guide.
