A friend of mine once told me that it was impressive how I managed to keep pumping out decent-quality posts day after day. I say it’s more impressive that I managed to keep my mind from pinballing from topic to topic. Sticking to these two-weekers has been both a saving grace and an unforgiving burden. Especially in these later months, I have been getting more ideas than I can keep up with writing about. But, just like Joseph in the land of Egypt, I am stockpiling all those ideas for a time of creative famine. So far, abundance has still been following me.

But I have learned a few valuable lessons from this consistency. First of all, yeah-it does make me a bit of a machine-writer. I’m actually pretty proud of that. I think anything that’s worth achieving in this world will come with a bit of a push, a time when you aren’t really feeling it. Those initial pleasures always wear off, and only the truly consistent stick with it when that high fades.

I’m the same way with drumming. Sure, I have times when inspiration strikes like lightning and I want to play ‘til my wrists get sore and the neighbors start griping, but I could produce the same quality if I were sitting on a tack and my socks were soaking wet! That’s the mark of true greatness. But that’s not to say that every post comes out just the same. Some days I’d rather check facebook a million and one times than try to sit down and finish a thought that flows about as well as a river uphill. Those days still happen.

Learning to have that machine-like persistence has been a theme for me lately. From work to here, to the gym, the temptation to quit when I’m just not feeling it is always there, even for a stubborn mule like me. I guess eventually, every stubborn mule runs out of steam. The question is are you going to keep pushing when you get tired? Or are you going to dedicate yourself to something worthwhile? That question will separate the spoiled brats from the legends.

And make no mistake-those droughts will come. If you keep at something long enough, it will eventually have a boring season. It won’t be fun, it won’t be lighthearted or entertaining, it will be work. That fresh high of working a new job or finding a new hobby will fade and you will be left wondering why you’re doing this. Where you go from there and how you answer that question will determine your course in life. Not only for that which you are committed to, but for the kind of person you become. And if you let yourself quit now, you may wind up quitting when it matters most. And you don’t want that, do you?

But that’s not to say that a boring season is a meaningless season. You may be firmly planted on your path of purpose, but that path may be flat and bland for a while. It may still be the right path, but you may feel like it’s plateauing. If you steer off to try something else, you could wind up missing a big growth opportunity, or neglecting all the good that is coming to you where you are.

It’s easy to stop seeing those beautiful things that are right in front of you. It’s how our brains work (or perhaps, don’t.) But we lose the eyes to see our purpose, our path, and all the beauty that surrounds us if we aren’t a little tolerant to the lows and blows of everyday persistence. So take some time to list the good things that are all around you and all that’s going well for you right now

But It might be tempting to simply write “nothing. Nothing is going right for me right now.” But come on! You’ve got eyes, right? If you’re able to read this, they’re at least sorta working! And, for that matter, you can read! That’s pretty cool. There’s lots of stuff that is actually going right in your life right now. You just have to open your eyes to see it.

So I pray that God opens your eyes to see all the glorious beauty before you. That His presence and all its radiance graces you this day and that a spring of radiance overflows from the inner depths of your soul.

Until Next Time

May Peace be your Guide.
